Mouthpiece XIII, Mathilde of Loci, Part I is the first part a three-act opera telling the story of the final moments of a fictional exemplar of memory. It is loosely based on the life of Matteo Ricci, who, in the late sixteenth century, taught the Method of Loci, or “Memory Palace,” a mnemonic technique of associatively linking memories to places within an architectural location. In the opera’s account, the protagonist disappears in 1602 following a summons to the “Great Hall.” This story recounts the fantastical events that occurred within the hall.
